Custom Window Decal Surface Options
Our custom window decals adhere best to glass, mirrors, metal, windows, and other non-porous surfaces. This includes fiberglass plastics, chrome, aluminum, and certain resins.
Typically these window decals are used on large windows, glass walls, or counters made from a suitable material.
Ideally, you should install the decal on the smoothest surface for optimal visual impact. Plus, when the underlying surface is textured you risk tearing the vinyl and weakening the adhesive. On the other hand, rivets or curves pose no problem for this type of adhesive vinyl.
If you have a question about whether your surface is suitable or not, give us a call directly so we can discuss your options.
Sizing and Cut for Custom Window Decals
Custom window decals often are designed for showcasing eye-catching designs on glass office walls or vast windowed storefronts.
So, our sizing options are virtually unlimited. Sheet sizes range from 6” to 48” wide and 6” to 96” high. We are always able to piece together pieces for a larger seamless design if need be. There are also ways to utilize empty space between designs to create unique and stylized window decals.
Remember, these custom window decals can also be cut in any shape you like. That includes curved edges, reverse cut, and any other die-cut designs.
So whether you need a small window decal of your logo on a door or a large mural-esque panel to ensure privacy, we can work with you to get you what you need in the size you desire.
Our team is available to deliver and install our custom window decals anywhere in Southern California, including San Diego, Orange County, and Los Angeles. For certain corporate and enterprise projects our team can also fly to your business.
Because this high-quality vinyl must be installed seamlessly and smoothly for maximum impact, we recommend either professional installation or a thorough review of the installation process before you install it. This is particularly important for large projects.
If you choose to install these decals yourself, for larger sized decals you may need an additional person to assist you. Decals with logos, typography, or die-cut features will come pre-spaced and pre-masked with a transfer tape for simple installation.
- Installation is recommended when temperatures are 60-90°F.
- Prepare the surface. Thoroughly wash and clean.
- Ensure your surface is completely dry.
- Mark on the wall where you will put the decal, masking tape is best for this.
- When the surface is entirely ready, starting from the top edge, remove part of the backing.
- Carefully align the decal with the pre-marked area and lightly apply pressure to adhere the graphic to the surface.
- Ensure that the decal is straight and aligned, if necessary you can carefully reposition before the adhesive has fully set.
- Once the decal is perfectly placed, you can continue peeling the backing slowly down the decal and gently apply to the surface. Continually apply pressure with your hands and fingers to lightly adhere the decal to the wall surface.
- Once fully in place, double-check that the decal is positioned correctly.
- Then, using a squeegee or credit card and starting from the center of the decal apply firm pressure across the entire surface of the decal.
- If bubbles or wrinkles appear, gently lift the portion of the decal away from the window and re-adhere.
- Once you have firmly adhered the entire decal, run the squeegee over it one last time to reinforce the adhesive.
- If your decal includes a premask, gently remove it by pulling from the bottom corner up at a 90-degree angle.
- Once you’ve removed the premask, lay the premask liner over the decal once more and run the squeegee one final time over the liner placed on top of the decal.
- If working with multiple panels or pieces, repeat the process for each until you’ve completed your custom window design. Make sure to verify the precise position with each section to align your image correctly.
- The adhesion is set after 24 hours.
Life Span of Custom Window Decals
Our custom window decals are long-lasting, especially when used indoors.
For indoor applications, these decals often last for 3+ years. These decals are also perfect for outdoor usage. Typically, under normal outdoor conditions, they will last up to 3 years.
If you already know where your custom frosted glass decals will be displayed, let us know. We can provide you with an estimate of the average lifespan according to your specific situation.
Under normal conditions, on a flat, vertical, surface the vinyl is rated to last from 5-7 years.
We highly recommend lamination for long term projects, but short term displays will be fine without it.
Remember, you can easily remove your decals at any time with heat or chemicals. Follow product removal directions for the best results.
Caring for Your Custom Window Decals
Proper care and cleaning can do a great deal to extend the life of your window advertising.
Never scrub the film and practice the utmost care to prevent scratching the film surface. Scratches will greatly affect the final look. Keep bushes, tree branches, and other types of items that could scratch away from the decal surface. Never use a power washer, brush, or scrubbing tool with rough edges on window clings as they may lift and damage the decals.
Always use mild, nonabrasive, nonsolvent products in cleaning your window decals. Most dirt and debris can be removed with a cloth soaked in soapy water.
If your window advertising is on a vehicle, take care to park the car in a shaded, covered area whenever possible. As a best practice, do not apply waxes or polishes on top of the decal.
Regular cleaning will help ensure that dirt and debris do not work their way into the edges of the clings and cause fraying.
The 3M vinyl has excellent resistance to water, however, it is not meant to be immersed in water. It is also resistant to mild alkalis, acids, and salt.

Custom Window Decals Questions and Answers
Your top questions about custom window decals
What material is your custom window decal?
We use high-quality 3M cast vinyl with a pressure-activated adhesive.
There are many products called “custom window decals” which are cling-type decals, however, our custom window decal is meant for long-lasting, vibrant durable decal application. This type of decal is perfect for semi-permanent and high-impact uses.
Will the decal be clear?
No. We use a product that comes in 50+ color options that all have a certain degree of opacity. The default option is white vinyl, but feel free to let us know which color option you prefer!
For transparent options, check out our custom frosted glass decals.
Do you offer other types of window decals?
Of course, here is a list of our other window decal options:
- Custom frosted glass decals: These decals use translucent vinyl to mimic an elegant “frosted” or “etched” appearance on surfaces such as glass, mirrors, and more. Their transparency is enough to let light into your space while the subtle opacity ensures effective privacy.
- Perforated window vinyl: When applied on windows, this material allows those on the inside to see out, while simultaneously showcasing vibrant displays to those outside.
- Custom die-cut vinyl decals: These decals are printed and contour cut according to your design specifications. There is no background, bleed, or filler area. If you are looking for lettering, numbering, or any kind of intricate shape, this is the decal for you.
Can the decals be cut into letters, shapes, or in a custom die-cut shape?
Yes! We are happy to cut your decal into any shape you’d like.
This includes custom or contour cuts. Specify whether or not you would like us to leave a border around your custom cut or not.
If specifically interested in die cut vinyl for lettering, numbering, or other intricate designs, check out our custom die cut vinyl decals.
Can my decal have more than 2 colors? Will it cost more?
We print our custom window decals using our full range of UV safe colors. So, you can design a sign printed with any range of colors without increasing the cost of your sign.
The price is determined by the size, quantity, and additional features (lamination or custom cut).
Will the exposure to extreme weather or temperatures ruin my decal?
No, exposure to extreme weather or temperature alone will not ruin your decal.
However, it will greatly affect the lifespan of your decal and overall look. Outside, they should last 1-3 years.
Using these window decals outside means that their lifespan will be shorter than if they are used inside. Extreme weather can affect the overall look if pieces of debris scratch the surface or extremely high temperatures can affect the vibrancy.
We do use UV ink that remains vibrant for several years and recommended the laminate option for longer-lasting outdoor decals.
Will the decal damage or ruin my window?
No. Even if a residual adhesive is left behind after you’ve removed the decal, it is easy to clean with the proper cleaner or by lifting it up with a sharp-edged tool. We recommend taking care when using a sharp edge so that you do not scratch your window when either installing or removing the decal.
Will the decal affect the transparency of my window?
Yes. These window decals have a certain level of opacity and will certainly affect the transparency of your storefront, glass, or window. Even unprinted decals will obscure light and visibility.
How do I store my decal?
If you must store your decal for a little while before installation, make sure to store it flat and in a temperature-controlled environment. We do not recommend waiting too long before installation or the adhesive nature of the backing will deteriorate. For best results, install your decal within 3 months of receiving it or sooner.
How do I clean my decal? Or, how can I wash my window with the decal installed?
Decals and the window onto which they are installed are easy to clean using a typical window cleaner and a gentle rag.
Do not use power washers, squeegees, abrasive scrubs, or sharp edges.
How do I remove my decal easily?
These decals come with instructions for easy removal. Decals that haven’t been installed for very long can usually be removed simply by peeling away. Start at a corner and pull at a 90-degree angle for the best results. You may want to use a straight edge to assist with removal.
For decals that have been up for more than 1 year, we recommend using heat or chemicals to assist with removal. For example, using a blow dryer blown on the decal will soften the adhesive and make it easier to remove.
To clean away any remaining residual adhesive, common window cleaners will do the trick. You can also use a sharp-edged tool, just be careful not to scratch the window or underlying surface.
