Description

What are Custom Backlit Signs?

Custom backlit signs are prints on a specially crafted Duratrans adhesive vinyl. This Kodak product functions as a photo transparency film. That means when lights shine behind the printed vinyl, the material illuminates and displays magnificent, full-color designs.

For best results, we recommend customers use this printed vinyl in a lightbox that provides a light source.

What is Duratrans?

Duratrans is the most popular print material for custom backlit signs. Not to mention, it is a Kodak Professional product. You can trust that it is both time tested and engineered with optimal performance in mind.

With the Kodak brand name, it’s no surprise this material requires a photographic print process. It’s important to realize that unlike ink printing, which produces many tiny dots, custom backlit signs require a developing process. That is to say. They are more like photos with color saturation at a molecular level. Using this type of process produces prints with a continuous tone for beautiful full-color saturation.

Remember, light is a crucial component of this vinyl’s design. Whatever shape or print you choose, the material will showcase your design perfectly, especially if you use a lightbox or install a backlight.

Top Benefits of Custom Backlit Signs
Custom backlit signs are a great option for around the clock signage. The material offers businesses both indoor or outdoor solutions. Plus, with glowing backlights behind your design, it will shine brightly whether it’s day or night. Given that, you can trust these signs are working 24/7!

The durable, Duratrans vinyl is not only perfect for displaying saturated, rich colors, but it is also easy to install, long-lasting, and easy to remove.

You can customize your printed material for your backlit sign as you like. We can take your design and print it exactly to your specs straightaway. This signage option is one of the most reputable for replicating colors on every end of the spectrum. For example, photography galleries often use backlit lights to display photos. This gives gallery visitors the ability to see the full range of colors captured.

In the event that you need a custom cut, we have the ability to cut your print however you’d like. So long as you send us the specifications for your design, we can cut your vinyl to size. This includes die-cut options for contour cuts and lettering.

Installation of custom backlit signs is super simple and can typically be done alone. Instructions will also be included in your order.

A few items to collect for easier and hassle-free installation: Spray bottle, dish soap, paper towels, and window squeegee

Installation Instructions

  1. Prepare your lightbox panel, acrylic surface, or glass. Ensure it’s freshly cleaned and completely dry.
  2. Once the surface is ready, create a solution by combining 3 drops of dish soap (not hand soap) into 1 gallon of water. Mix thoroughly and then transfer the solution into a spray bottle.
  3. Take your decal and lay it down on a flat surface. Lay it down with the back liner facing up towards you.
  4. Carefully begin to remove the back liner. As you slowly remove the liner, simultaneously spray the solution onto the exposed decal surface. Spray generous amounts.
  5. Next, spray down the surface where the decal will be installed.
  6. Ensure that the decal’s adhesive side is sufficiently wet and make sure the intended surface where you will place your decal is sufficiently wet.
  7. Next, carefully place your decal on the desired surface. The application solution creates a surface adhesion that allows room for you to slide the decal exactly into the right position.
  8. Once you’ve perfectly aligned your decal to the underlying surface, take the backing liner and lay it over the decal.
  9. Using the squeegee, begin to run it carefully across the surface, starting from the center. Simultaneously, press firmly while running the squeegee from the center to the right edge and then from the center to the left edge.
  10. Continue this process until you’ve completely removed any trapped air bubbles and the excess application solution.
  11. Clean the edges of the decal with paper towels to remove the excess solution.
  12. It may take several days for the adhesive to dry and bind fully.
Lifespan of Custom Backlit Signs
Our custom backlit signs come with a 3-year manufacturer’s warranty and a 3-year installation warranty (should we install the product for you).

Often backlit signage lasts for 3+ years, especially if located indoors, out of direct sunlight, and if properly installed.

Caring for Your Custom Backlit Signs
Regularly clean your sign with a damp, gentle rag.

For optimal visual effect, keeping these signs clean is important! Dirt and debris will impact the ability for the light to shine through the material and negatively affect the overall look.

Do not ever power wash signs or windows with backlit sign material. This can damage the material or even the lightbox onto which it is installed.

Custom Backlit Signs Questions and Answers

Your top questions about custom backlit signs

What are the typical uses of backlit signs?
Custom backlit signs are usually paired with a lightbox. Typically you will see these types of backlit signs when you are driving at night.

Whether it’s a backlit billboard, business logo beckoning customers, or backlit bus stop advertisement, backlit signs are the top choice for round the clock signage.

Some of the most popular uses for this type of signage include:

  • Detailing store hours
  • Advertising new products or sales
  • Directional signage for exits and safety
  • Concerts or event signage
  • Movie theater posters
  • Bus stop and subway advertising
  • Mall directory signs
  • Mall advertisements
  • Hospital entrance signs
  • Strip malls signs listing shops
  • Backlit photos of food at fast-food chains
  • Tourist signs showcasing maps and information
  • Local announcements for community events, theater shows, and more
Is backlit film the same as a backlit overlay?
Backlit films are typically adhesive, like the material we use for our custom backlit signs.

By comparison, the word “overlay” implies that there is not an adhesive quality to the material.

In either case, the two materials will both showcase beautiful backlit signage, but one is adhesive (films) while the other is not adhesive (overlay).

What is the default color of your custom backlit sign?
The default color is white.
How will the backlit sign impact the transparency of a storefront or window?
It depends on your particular set up.

The material we use is semi-translucent. So, a backlit sign that covers your entire storefront will usually show up as opaque during the day, given there is not a light source shining directly behind it.

Nevertheless, how much light the window receives and the brightness of the lights inside will determine the overall transparency or lack of transparency.

Feel free to contact us directly if you have further questions. You may be interested in other products we provide such as our perforated window vinyl. Speak with our team directly if you would like to learn what is the best fit for your signage!

If I place my backlit sign on the inside of my storefront, will it be visible to those outside?

No. This decal acts like an opaque decal and cannot be reverse printed.

To clarify, the graphic design prints on the front of the material, and the backside is adhesive.

So, when you install the decal onto a surface such as a storefront, the outer facing surface showcases your design. That means if you want the design visible to customers outside, you must install the decal on the outside facing window surface. On the other hand, if you want your customers inside to see the design, install the sign on the inside of the window.

Is it possible to make my backlit sign double sided?
No. The material is made specifically to have a light shining from the back, through the material to illuminate the design in a single direction. So, this is not possible.

If, for instance, your lightbox has two sides, you will need to order 2 backlit decals.

Can I use my backlit sign outside?

Yes! These signs are, without a doubt, made for both indoor and outdoor usage.

Will exposure to sun, water, or the elements ruin my custom backlit sign?
No, the material we use is expressly designed to be used indoors and out. While inclement weather may affect the longevity of your sign, in general, your sign will perform beautifully in rain or shine.

It is important to realize that very extreme temperatures such as very high or very low temperatures can affect longevity. That being said, your sign will still last for several years.

Will the light source lighting up the sign impact the quality or longevity?

The engineering of this material allows it to perform exceptionally well with a backlight shining through it.

In other words, the light source should only enhance the visibility of the design!

Will the underlying surface where I apply the printed material be permanently ruined or damaged?

No, in fact, the advantage of this type of signage is the ability to change it out often. So, easy installation and removal are both equally important!

For instance, think about the glowing signs at the movie theater. Movies are released on a rotating schedule, as a result, these backlit movie posters are often swapped out as new movies are released.

Similarly, if you take the bus you may notice that the advertisements on bus stop walls are often changed. It’s thanks to high-quality backlit material that this is possible.

The important thing to remember is to properly install the backlit sign on the right surface. Only install your sign on the appropriate surface, in essence, any non-porous and smooth surface such as glass and acrylic. Equally important: make sure you clean the surface before installing!

How do I remove the custom backlit sign material?
Whether you installed the material to a lightbox or window, the removal process is simple.

Generally, signs can be pulled off easily. Not to mention, using some heat (for example, from a blow dryer), can help make the process even easier.

Regardless, there are cases when there may be some slightly sticky residual adhesive remaining. In this case, you can use a standard window cleaner and a gentle rag to easily lift it.
